Collectible Description

Designer Eumphemia-Ann Sydney Davies of Sydney-Davies from Sierra Leone exchanged with artisans Big Dread Kente from Ghana to create a bespoke look for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. Sydney-Davies and Big Dread Kente have worked together to create a natural raffia-fringed hand-woven kente cloth midi skirt with recyclable plastic blocking, and a bralet top embellished with Swarovski upcycled crystals in queen bee motifs. The outfit is completed with an oversized bardot wrap jacket made from hand-woven gold kente cloth, hand-woven country cloth, and 100% wool, and a handmade necklace and bracelet crafted by Ousman Toure in The Gambia. The necklace is made using glass beads and wooden Malawian trade beads which were traditionally used as tender. The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and High Commission Australia, London. Both exhibitions were curated by VOGUE

Artist Biography

A Journey Woven in Resilience: The Story of Sydney-Davies

Euphemia-Ann Sydney-Davies is more than a fashion designer; she is a storyteller, an innovator, and a beacon of hope whose work embodies the power of transformation. Born in Sierra Leone, her early life was irrevocably altered by the brutal civil war that engulfed her homeland. Forced to flee as a child refugee, Sydney-Davies’s journey became one of displacement, adaptation, and ultimately, artistic triumph. This profound experience isn't merely a biographical detail; it is the very foundation upon which her luxury clothing label, sydney-davies, is built – a testament to resilience woven into every thread.

The echoes of Sierra Leone’s vibrant culture, coupled with the stark realities of displacement, ignited within Sydney-Davies a desire to create something beautiful and meaningful. After finding refuge and opportunity abroad, she channeled her experiences into fashion design, establishing sydney-davies in 2013. The brand quickly distinguished itself not only through its aesthetic originality but also through its unwavering commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. This wasn’t simply a stylistic choice; it was a conscious rejection of the fast-fashion industry that often prioritizes profit over people and planet, a direct response to the vulnerabilities she witnessed during her childhood.

The Language of Cloth: Innovation & Sustainability

Sydney-Davies's designs are characterized by their innovative use of materials and techniques. She doesn’t simply follow trends; she *creates* them, often incorporating unexpected textures and silhouettes that challenge conventional notions of beauty. Her work is a celebration of craftsmanship, with each garment meticulously constructed to ensure both quality and longevity. But beyond the aesthetic appeal lies a deeper commitment to sustainability. Sydney-Davies actively seeks out eco-friendly fabrics, minimizes waste through thoughtful pattern cutting, and prioritizes fair labor practices throughout her supply chain.

Her approach is holistic – from sourcing raw materials to the final presentation of her collections. She views fashion not as a disposable commodity but as an art form with the potential to effect positive change. This dedication has garnered recognition from influential platforms like the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, showcasing her work on a global stage and solidifying her position as a leader in the ethical fashion movement.

A Voice for Change: Recognition & Impact

The impact of Sydney-Davies extends far beyond the runway. Her story – that of a refugee turned successful designer – has resonated with audiences worldwide, inspiring countless others to pursue their dreams despite adversity. Features in prestigious publications such as Vogue, Dazed, and Hunger have amplified her message, bringing attention not only to her designs but also to the urgent need for greater sustainability and ethical responsibility within the fashion industry.

Her work is a powerful commentary on diaspora identity, exploring themes of belonging, displacement, and cultural heritage. The “Sydney-Davies look at Australian High Commission, London”, exemplifies this – a striking visual statement that celebrates her journey and challenges conventional perceptions of beauty and style. It’s a reminder that fashion can be more than just clothing; it can be a vehicle for social commentary, cultural exchange, and personal empowerment.
