Frank Espada: Chronicler of Urban Resilience

Francisco Luis Espada Roig (1930 – 2014) wasn’t a household name, but within the realm of photojournalism and social realism, he possessed an indelible mark. Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Espada's early life instilled in him a profound connection to his roots and a fervent belief in community activism—influences that would shape his artistic vision throughout his career. He emigrated to New York City as a young man, enrolling at City College of New York before pursuing formal training at the New Institute of Photography, honing his skills in capturing the essence of human experience through visual storytelling.
