Di Giovanni depicted this female figure in a small-sized painting that he executed with little effort. It shows how the artist followed the trend of the time both for the choice of the subject, imbued with Japanese references, and for the refined and ‘international’ technique he employed, i.e., pastel colours, which were the best suited for the small, quick sketches the Impressionists painted. After having studied painting in Naples with Domenico Morelli, he returned to Sicily where he soon made a name for himself in local artistic circles in which he asked for genre and historical paintings showing an intense, realistic rendering combined with the use of bright water and pastel colours.
