Born Wilhelm Ernst Hans Franz Heysen in Hamburg, Germany, his family emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, when he was just seven years old, shaping his formative artistic sensibilities within a distinctly Australian context. These movements instilled in him a commitment to capturing fleeting moments of light and color—a technique he meticulously honed throughout his prolific career.
