In an idealized classicist landscape, Saint Carlo Borromeo stands next to a huge marble sarcophagus depicting in bas-relief a worship of the shepherds. The performance was based on a painting attributed to Rafael from c.1635. Borromeo points to the relief while addressing two men, including a deacon. A crippled man sits next to him for the sarcophagus. On the left in the foreground, the Holy Family rides with the Christ Child on donkeys, accompanied by a young man. In the middle a blind boy and a blind girl cross a stream of water. Right on the second plan, a richly dressed man gives alms to a group of beggars.
