About the artist: Richard M. Gibney (Cpl, USMC) (1922 – 2000) Richard Gibney enlisted in the Marine Corps on 27 October 1942 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 18th Marines, 2d Marine Division. He fought in the battles of Tarawa, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, Tinian, Marianas Islands, Saipan, and Okinawa. Gibney received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1959 from SyracuseUniversity and worked as an artist. In the 1990s, he created a series of paintings from his wartime experiences for the Museum’s art collection. Gibney died in October 2000.
