Irene Lentz (1907-1962), born in South Dakota, was a fashion and costume designer in Hollywood and was famous for her feminine clothing. In addition to leading her own company, “Irene Ltd”, she worked for, among others, Judy Garland, Judy Lamarr and LanaTurner. She selected an interestingly textured, twill weave wool fabric for this suit that is structured with fine, dark brown separating lines. The slightly tapered jacket, with collar and lapel, skims the hip and closes with six self-covered buttons. The sleeves are narrow and three-quarters length. The bow on the left lapel is original. The jacket is fully lined with brown crepe de Chine. The smooth skirt lies in two small folds at the waistband and has short walking slits in the side seams. The waistband closure is a hook and eye with a zipper. The skirt is unlined.

Artist Biography

Irène Dana for Schiaparelli: A Vision of Surrealist Elegance

The history of French haute couture is often told through the lens of its most legendary names, yet the true essence of an era frequently resides in the hands of those who safeguard its creative flame during its darkest hours. Irène Dana (1904–1978) stands as a pivotal figure in this narrative, inextricably linked to the avant-garde legacy of Elsa Schiaparelli. Born in Paris at the dawn of the twentieth century—a period defined by radical artistic experimentation and profound societal shifts—Dana’s career reached its zenith amidst the tumultuous backdrop of World War II. While many saw her as a guardian of an existing house, she was, in truth, an indispensable collaborator whose innate creative spirit helped steer the Schiaparelli atelier through one of its most challenging historical junctures.

Dana’s artistic sensibilities were deeply rooted in the classical traditions of fine art. Her formative years were shaped by her studies at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she honed her skills in painting and sculpture. This rigorous training in form, volume, and texture would later manifest in a unique approach to fashion design, allowing her to view garments not merely as clothing, quite literally as wearable sculptures. When the German occupation of France forced Elsa Schiaparelli to depart Paris in 1941, she entrusted Dana with the monumental task of overseeing the atelier’s operations. This was far more than an administrative appointment; it was a mandate to preserve the artistic integrity and the livelihood of the house's workforce during a time of extreme scarcity.

The Surrealist Spirit Amidst Wartime Austerity

The period between 1941 and 1945 became a defining chapter for Dana, as she navigated the constraints of wartime austerity with remarkable ingenuity. Under her stewardship, the Schiaparelli aesthetic did not wither; instead, it adapted, finding new ways to express the dreamlike distortions and unexpected juxtapositions characteristic of Surrealism. Influenced by the movement that captivated Europe, Dana’s work embraced a sense of playful defiance against the mundane realities of war. She possessed a singular ability to utilize innovative textiles and silhouettes that defied conventional norms, ensuring that the house's signature "shocking" elegance remained intact even when luxury materials were nearly impossible to procure.

Her designs during this era often featured remarkable structural elements that echoed her sculptural training. One might look at the iconic coats of the period—such as those captured by photographer Lee Miller for British Vogue—to see the hallmarks of her vision. These pieces often displayed:

  • Architectural Silhouettes: The use of bell-like hemlines and wide raglan sleeves that created a sense of movement and volume.
  • Intricate Detailing: Remarkable ray-shaped darts and diagonal patch pockets that added a layer of geometric complexity to the fabric.
  • Textural Innovation: A masterful use of heavy rayon satin and clever construction techniques to mimic the luxury of more abundant eras.

Legacy and Historical Significance

The historical significance of Irène Dana lies in her role as the bridge between the high-concept Surrealism of the 1930s and the renewed couture era of the post-war years. By maintaining the continuity of the Schiaparelli name during the occupation, she ensured that when Elsa returned to Paris in 1945, there was a vibrant, functioning foundation upon which to rebuild. Her work serves as a testament to the resilience of creativity; she proved that even under the shadow of conflict, the pursuit of beauty and the exploration of the avant-garde could flourish.

Today, when we reflect on the evolution of French fashion, Dana is remembered not just as a successor, but as a visionary who understood that fashion is an art form capable of transcending its era. Her ability to blend the disciplined techniques of the Beaux-Arts with the whimsical, often jarring beauty of Surrealism left an indelible mark on the history of couture, cementing her place as a silent architect of one of the twentieth century's most influential fashion legacies.
