Collectible Description

Jacques-Henri Lartigue’s “Poussy, portrait with ring and glass bracelet” – A Snapshot of Parisian Charm

Captured in 1931 by the remarkably observant French photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue, "Poussy, portrait with ring and glass bracelet" isn't merely a photograph; it’s a crystallized moment of Parisian life, brimming with understated elegance and a touch of playful mystery. This seemingly simple image – a young woman, identified as Renée Perle, gazing directly at the camera while holding a delicate glass bracelet and wearing a single, elegant ring – reveals layers of narrative depth through Lartigue's signature style: spontaneous, almost fleeting, and imbued with an intimate sense of connection.

Lartigue’s approach to photography was revolutionary for his time. He eschewed the formal studio setting, preferring to capture his subjects in their natural environments – bustling streets, elegant cafes, and private residences. This commitment to immediacy is powerfully evident here. The photograph feels less like a posed portrait and more like a candid observation, as if Lartigue simply happened upon this captivating scene. His use of the Kodak Brownie camera, then considered a relatively crude device, allowed him to prioritize capturing the essence of a moment over technical perfection, resulting in images that possess an unparalleled sense of authenticity.

The Artistry of Spontaneity: Lartigue’s Technique

Examining the photograph closely reveals Lartigue's masterful manipulation of light and composition. The black-and-white palette amplifies the textures – the sheen of the glass bracelet, the delicate folds of the woman’s dress, and the subtle shadows that define her face. He employs a shallow depth of field, drawing our attention solely to Perle and the immediate surroundings, creating an intimate and focused experience for the viewer. The composition is remarkably balanced, with Perle positioned slightly off-center, inviting us into her world. Notably, Lartigue’s use of early photographic techniques – including the potential for stereo images – adds a fascinating layer of technical complexity to this seemingly straightforward portrait.

The photograph's inherent charm lies in its ability to evoke a specific time and place: the vibrant, stylish atmosphere of 1930s Paris. The woman’s attire—a simple yet elegant dress—and the delicate bracelet suggest a world of understated luxury and social grace. It is important to note that Lartigue was one of the first artists to utilize the Kodak Brownie camera for snapshots, capturing the essence of early 20th-century France.

Symbolism and Emotional Resonance

Beyond its aesthetic qualities, “Poussy” resonates with a subtle sense of intrigue. The woman’s direct gaze invites us to contemplate her thoughts and feelings. The ring she wears—a small, unassuming detail—could symbolize status, love, or perhaps simply a cherished memory. The glass bracelet itself, fragile yet beautiful, hints at the fleeting nature of beauty and time. Lartigue's ability to capture such nuanced emotions through a single image is a testament to his keen eye and profound understanding of human psychology.

The photograph’s enduring appeal lies in its capacity to transport us back to a bygone era while simultaneously offering a glimpse into the universal experiences of beauty, connection, and fleeting moments. It's a reminder that even the simplest scenes can hold extraordinary significance when captured with artistry and sensitivity. This piece exemplifies Lartigue’s ability to transform everyday life into captivating works of art.
