Collectible Description

The mirror “Hommage a Madame Bovary” was created as part of the exhibition series Circulation in the Circle, launched by the Contemporary Design Department in 2018. According to the concept, the invited designer will select an object or ensemble of objects from the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts, and will create a new design as inspired by the object(s). The fourth invited artist in the series is Dechem Studio from Prague, one of the most recognised representatives of Czech contemporary glass art. The studio’s designers, Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek, selected a book with a unique binding from the book art collection of the museum, Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (80.84.1-2). In the second half of the 1930s, Károly Grill’s book publishing house in Budapest produced a unique binding from goatskin and marbled paper endpapers for the volume originally published in Paris in 1930.The Dechem Studio designers reflect upon the appearance of the book, as well as its content, with their work. They employed lithyalin glass, a type of glass whose markings are quite similar to the patterns of marbled paper, to produce their new object, which is none other than a mirror of unique design.

Artist Biography

Dechem Studio: Echoes of Bohemia in Lithyalin Glass

Born from a shared passion for glass and design, Dechem Studio – the collaborative venture of Czech designers Jakub Janďourek and Michaela Tomišková – represents a vibrant continuation of Bohemian artistic tradition while simultaneously forging a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Established in Prague in 2012, the studio’s work is immediately recognizable by its masterful manipulation of lithyalin glass, a technique that imbues each piece with an ethereal, almost otherworldly glow. This fascination with light and color stems from their shared background at the Nový Bor School of Glass, where they first encountered the transformative potential of this ancient craft – a material capable of capturing and reflecting light in ways that evoke both nostalgia and innovation.

Janďourek’s expertise lies in the technical intricacies of glass production, particularly his skill in hand-blowing, snapping, cutting, grinding, firing, engraving, and painting. Tomišková, on the other hand, brings a product design sensibility to the studio, shaping these techniques into objects that are both functional and deeply evocative. Their combined approach results in pieces that aren’t merely decorative; they're miniature narratives, often referencing elements of nature – particularly the muted color gradients reminiscent of landscapes and geological formations. This deliberate connection with the natural world is a key element of Dechem’s artistic philosophy.

The Language of Lithyalin

At the heart of Dechem Studio’s work lies lithyalin glass, a technique that distinguishes them from many contemporary glass artists. Unlike traditional clear or colored glass, lithyalin is created by applying a layer of white pigment to the surface of molten glass before it cools. This results in a translucent material that glows with an internal light when illuminated – a phenomenon often described as “luminescence.” The effect is profoundly atmospheric, creating a sense of depth and mystery within each piece. Janďourek and Tomišková meticulously control the thickness of this pigment layer, manipulating the intensity and hue of the glow to achieve specific emotional responses.

Their use of lithyalin isn’t simply decorative; it's deeply rooted in a historical context. Bohemian glassmaking has a long and storied past, renowned for its intricate designs and innovative techniques. Dechem Studio consciously draws upon this legacy while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of the medium. They often incorporate elements of traditional Czech motifs – floral patterns, geometric shapes, and stylized figures – into their lithyalin creations, subtly referencing the country’s rich artistic heritage.

Influences and Development

While rooted in Bohemian tradition, Dechem Studio's work is also informed by a broader range of influences. Tomišková’s background in product design brings a contemporary sensibility to the studio’s output, drawing inspiration from minimalist aesthetics and Scandinavian design principles. Janďourek’s experience in lighting technology further expands their creative palette, allowing them to experiment with innovative forms and light-emitting techniques.

The studio's trajectory has been marked by a gradual expansion of its product range. Initially focused on vases, Dechem Studio has diversified into lamps – both suspension and floor models – as well as wall sconces and table lights. This evolution reflects their ongoing exploration of the possibilities offered by lithyalin glass and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of the medium.

Recognition and Legacy

Dechem Studio’s work has garnered significant recognition within the Czech design community and beyond. The studio has been featured in numerous publications, including Design Without Borders, and its pieces have been exhibited at galleries and design fairs across Europe. In 2018, they were selected as ambassadors for PLOVE, a Czech brand specializing in sustainable footwear, highlighting their commitment to craftsmanship and ethical production.

More than just creating beautiful objects, Dechem Studio is preserving and revitalizing a vital aspect of Bohemian artistic heritage. Through their masterful manipulation of lithyalin glass, they are illuminating the past while simultaneously shaping the future of this extraordinary medium – ensuring that its echoes continue to resonate for generations to come.
