Early in his career, Van Dongen exhibited with both Fauvist and German Expressionist painters. Later he became a fashionable society portraitist. This sitter, Yvette Labrousse (1906–2000) won the Miss Lyon beauty contest in 1929 and subsequently represented France in the 1930 Miss World contest. In 1944, she married the Sultan Aga Khan III.
