- Lambertus Johannes Hansen came from an artistic family; his father was the cityscape painter Carel Lodewijk Hansen. This familial connection undoubtedly played a role in nurturing his early interest in art.
- He received extensive training under several prominent Dutch artists, including his father, Jean Augustin Daiwaille, Charles Howard Hodges, Jan Hulswit, Pieter Barbiers IV, and Jan Willem Pieneman. This diverse education shaped his artistic sensibilities and technical skills.

- In 1833, he was elected as a fellow member of the Amsterdam Academy and subsequently became a teacher at the institution. He later mentored Hendrik Jacobus Scholten.

- In 1834, Hansen married Cornelia Helena Anna Christiani. Tragically, she passed away in 1842 after giving birth to three sons.
- He remarried on April 5, 1847, to Geertruij Meeltj Stijnis.
- Following his death on September 6, 1859, a sale of his estate included paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries alongside his own works, drawings, prints, furniture, and other possessions.
