manuel de azambuja leite pereira jardim, a renowned portuguese painter and art teacher, was born in 1884 in montemor-o-velho, portugal. he passed away in lisbon, portugal, in 1923. jardim's artistic journey began with his studies at the escola de belas-artes in lisbon from 1903 to 1905. he then pursued further education in paris, attending the académie julian under the tutelage of jean-paul laurens.artistic career and notable works
jardim's first major exhibition was at the salon in 1911, featuring his piece le déjeuner. this marked the beginning of his successful career, which included travels to germany, italy, and spain. upon returning to portugal, he established an art school in coimbra and attempted to found the sociedade portuguesa de arte moderna with architect josé pacheko.later life and legacy
jardim's time in paris was cut short due to his diagnosis with tuberculosis, leading to his return to portugal. he passed away two years later, in 1923. despite his untimely death, jardim's legacy endures through his contributions to the art world, including illustrations for contemporânea and serões. a major retrospective at the sociedade nacional de belas-artes in 1925, featuring works by jardim alongside amadeo de souza-cardoso and santa-rita pintor, further solidified his place in art history.notable exhibitions and collections
