Collectible Description

Some of the finest glassware at Clayton includes a service produced by M. Q. Testolini of Venice. These drinking vessels, along with a matching dessert service, were purchased by the Fricks during their 1893 vacation to Italy. The Renaissance-style decoration borrows elements from 16th-century Venetian glass. Mrs. Frick’s monogram, “AHCF,” can be seen just below the rims of the glasses.

Artist Biography

A Life Intertwined with Art and Philanthropy

Manuela Testolini, born in Toronto, Canada, in 1976 to an Italian father and Egyptian mother, is a figure whose life beautifully embodies the intersection of artistic expression and dedicated humanitarian work. While perhaps initially recognized for her marriage to music icon Prince, Testolini has forged a distinct path as a designer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, leaving an indelible mark on both the art world and communities around the globe. Her journey began not in the spotlight but through a commitment to social causes, a passion that would ultimately intertwine with her creative pursuits and define her legacy. From a young age, she demonstrated a keen awareness of societal needs, volunteering and consulting for organizations dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations. This early involvement laid the foundation for her future endeavors and shaped her understanding of art’s potential as a catalyst for positive change.

From Supporting Prince's Vision to Founding Gamillah

Testolini first entered the public sphere through her relationship with Prince, whom she married in 2001. However, their connection was far more than a personal one; it blossomed from shared philanthropic interests. She began working with his charitable foundation, Love 4 One Another, quickly becoming instrumental in identifying and supporting projects ranging from community gardens to shelters for families in need. This period proved formative, exposing her to the power of art as a vehicle for social impact and solidifying her commitment to using resources to uplift marginalized communities. Following their divorce in 2006, Testolini channeled her experiences and passion into creating her own venture: Gamillah. The company, launched with a focus on luxury candles, is more than just a business; it’s an extension of her artistic vision and dedication to ethical practices. Each candle is meticulously crafted, reflecting a commitment to quality materials and sustainable production methods.

The Art of Scent and the Power of In A Perfect World

Gamillah candles are not merely decorative objects; they represent Testolini’s unique aesthetic sensibility—a blend of sophistication, warmth, and cultural influences. The scents themselves evoke a sense of place and emotion, transporting users to different worlds and fostering moments of tranquility. But the true heart of Testolini's philanthropic work lies in her organization, In A Perfect World (IAPW). Founded with the mission of empowering children and communities through education and access to basic needs, IAPW has undertaken numerous impactful projects worldwide. Notably, she spearheaded the construction of schools in Malawi, a testament to Prince’s enduring legacy and their shared commitment to providing opportunities for future generations. The second school built under her guidance began classes in 2017, offering hope and education to countless children. This initiative exemplifies Testolini's belief that access to quality education is fundamental to breaking cycles of poverty and fostering sustainable development.

A Legacy of Blending Creativity with Compassion

Testolini’s influence extends beyond her direct philanthropic efforts. She has become a vocal advocate for social responsibility within the art world, encouraging artists and designers to use their platforms to raise awareness about critical issues and support meaningful causes. Her story serves as an inspiring example of how creativity can be harnessed for positive change, demonstrating that artistic expression is not merely aesthetic but also deeply intertwined with ethical considerations and societal impact. She continues to blend her passion for design with her unwavering commitment to philanthropy, proving that a life dedicated to both beauty and compassion can create lasting ripples of hope and transformation. Her work reminds us that true artistry lies not only in the creation of beautiful objects but also in the positive influence we have on the world around us.
