Born into the vibrant, artistic heartbeat of Prague in 1902, Marie Čermívaná was destined to transcend the boundaries of conventional portraiture. Her formal education at the Prague School of Fine Arts instilled in her a technical mastery that would eventually serve as the vessel for her most radical ideas. The evolution of Toyen’s style was a journey through the most turbulent and creative currents of the twentieth-century avant-garde.
