Artist Biography
Marie-Louise von Motesiczky: A Dreamlike Vision of Vienna and Beyond
Marie-Louise von Motesiczky (October 24, 1906 – June 10, 1996) was an Austrian painter who established herself as a significant figure in British art during the mid-20th century. Born into an aristocratic family steeped in artistic heritage—her father, Edmund von Motesiczky, was a celebrated cellist and avid hunter; her mother, Henriette von Lieben, descended from one of Vienna’s wealthiest cultural dynasties—Motesiczky's upbringing fostered a profound appreciation for art and creativity. Notably, the von Lieben family generously donated artworks to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, creating a salon mirroring Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s literary endeavors. Leaving school at just thirteen, she pursued her artistic ambitions diligently, attending art schools across Europe including Vienna, Paris (at the Montparnasse Painting Academy), and Berlin. Her formative years were marked by an encounter with Max Beckmann at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, where he served as her masterclass instructor. This relationship proved enduring, forging a lifelong friendship and profoundly influencing her artistic sensibilities. Beckmann’s expressive style—characterized by jagged lines and emotionally charged compositions—became a cornerstone of Motesiczky's technique. Simultaneously, Oskar Kokoschka exerted considerable sway over her vision, introducing her to the realm of psychological portraiture and exploring themes of vulnerability and inner turmoil. Beyond these influential mentors, Motesiczky cultivated connections with fellow artists like Marie Duras, art historian Sir Ernst Gombrich, and Milein Cosmann, creating a vibrant artistic milieu that nurtured her creativity. The shadow of Nazi annexation loomed large over Motesiczky’s life in 1938 when Vienna fell under fascist rule. Forced to flee alongside her mother, Henriette, she sought refuge in London via Amsterdam, joining the Artists' International Association and contributing to exhibitions showcasing their collective artistic endeavors. Her debut solo exhibition in London in 1944 solidified her presence on the British art scene. Tragically, her brother perished during World War II due to Nazi persecution for opposing the regime—a devastating loss that undoubtedly impacted her emotional landscape. During this period, she embarked upon a passionate romance with writer Elias Canetti, who remained a steadfast companion and confidante throughout their lives. Following the war’s conclusion, Motesiczky continued to exhibit her paintings internationally, residing primarily in London where she cherished the city's cultural vibrancy alongside her mother. Her artistic output consistently explored fantastical imagery interwoven with symbolic representations—a stylistic hallmark that distinguishes her oeuvre from many of her contemporaries. Recurring motifs included dreamlike landscapes populated by enigmatic figures and portraits imbued with psychological depth, reflecting Kokoschka’s influence and delving into the complexities of human emotion. Motesiczky's legacy resides not merely in her individual artworks but also in her contribution to fostering a dialogue between Austrian Expressionism and British Surrealism, cementing her place as an artist who dared to confront existential questions through evocative visual narratives.marie louise von motesiczky
