Artist Biography
Mariele Neudecker: Exploring Landscapes and Memory
Mariele Neudecker, born in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1965, is a multifaceted artist whose practice delves into the intersection of landscape representation, psychological exploration, and conceptual art. Her work consistently investigates how images of nature communicate complex ideas about human experience and cultural narratives—a fascination that has shaped her artistic trajectory since her formative years at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork, Ireland (1985–1987). From Goldsmiths’ College London (BA Hons Degree) in 1987-90, Neudecker honed her sculptural skills before pursuing a Master's degree at Chelsea College of Art and Design (MA Sculpture) in 1991-92. This grounding in traditional media provided a foundation for her experimentation with digital image creation during her time at Tower Hamlets College (Digital Image Creation/Manipulation), culminating in a significant contribution to the Site Gallery’s exhibition program in Sheffield (2003). Her artistic journey continued with residencies at CERN and Headlands Center for the Arts, furthering her engagement with scientific inquiry alongside artistic expression. Notably, she was commissioned to create Extraordinary Measures for Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Newcastle upon Tyne, demonstrating a commitment to collaborative projects that address pressing social issues. Furthermore, Neudecker’s participation in Triennale Fellbach 2010 earned her the Ludwig Gies Preis—a testament to her dedication and innovation within the contemporary art landscape. Neudecker's artistic output is characterized by a preoccupation with memory maps – intricate visual representations that combine topographical data with symbolic imagery. These works, such as “Never Eat Shredded Wheat,” explore how landscapes can serve as metaphors for psychological states and cultural histories. Her distinctive style blends abstraction and color palettes to convey profound emotional resonance. Her exhibitions have garnered international acclaim, showcasing her work in venues like Ikon Gallery, Tate St Ives, Tate Britain, Galerie Barbara Thumm, and Site Gallery. She is represented by Galerie Barbara Thumm, cementing her position as a respected voice within the art world. Her ongoing exploration of landscape and its symbolic power ensures that Mariele Neudecker’s artistic legacy will continue to inspire dialogue and contemplation for years to come.mariele neudecker
