During the First World War Snape joined the Volunteer Training Corps, demonstrating a commitment to civic duty alongside his artistic pursuits. He was educated at Gosport Grammar School and later pursued further studies at Cambridge University, honing his skills in watercolour painting and botanical illustration—a passion that would permeate much of his subsequent work.
