Struttura spaziale in tensione è un’opera significativa per comprendere l’attività dell’artista negli anni di militanza nel MAC. L’intensa vitalità cromatica, la musicalità e il ritmo impresso dalla composizione documentano quanto sia stata rilevante l’attività del pittore nello sviluppo delle posizioni astratto-concrete in Italia nel secondo dopoguerra. Non solo, l’opera dell’artista piemontese si ricollega direttamente alle ricerche scientifiche legate alla psicologia della percezione espresse dalla Gestaltpsychologie, conosciute quando nel 1950 Einaudi pubblicò La psicologia della forma di D. Katz. In relazione a questi presupposti teorici l’artista inizia a teorizzare l’idea di spazio pittorico come spazio dinamico in cui le forme (concrete) siano funzionali a un principio complessivo di equilibrio generale rispetto alla presenza di ogni singolo elemento. In proposito Luigi Lambertini scrisse: “Nel 1952, con le forme-spazio, Di Salvatore ritorna sul tema e non solo lo approfondisce, bensì lo amplia. Come sempre accade l’artista procede, se così possiamo dire, per segmenti. La sua ricerca si svolge passo dopo passo ma solo quando un problema è stato analizzato a fondo. Così, nel dipinto in questione, si assiste ad una somma, anzi ad un’integrazione di differenti orientamenti geometrici e di diverse – è fondamentale – strutture dei medesimi. … Lo spazio, per la ‘trasparenza’ di questi nuovi apporti, diviene sempre più polivalente, articolato da una molteplicità di definizioni di piani e di profondità senza misura. Ancora una volta lo spazio si identifica con il tempo? Certamente”.L’attività dell’artista nei decenni successivi si svilupperà poi in modo molto compatto sempre verso studi legati all’astrazione concreta e alle diverse relazioni percettive tra gli elementi pittorici. Interessante è inoltre ricordare l’importanza di Di Salvatore per la nascita a Novara nel 1954 della prima scuola italiana di design, poi trasferitasi nel 1970 a Milano con il nome di Scuola Politecnica del Design.
