In recent contemporary times, African foreign nationals in South Africahave experienced brutal human rights violations by South Africans. The rear-view mirror reflectsa placard that reads: “Are South Africans Afrophobic or Xenophobic?” It is a highly debated issue, and this rhetorical question is posed to the viewer to motivate them to take a stance onthe matter. The portrayal of the violence and intolerance conveyed through the chaotic, overcast, and busy atmosphere while a mob of community members are watching a man burnalive is appalling. The police are dutifully on this horrific crime scene as they dominate the right side of the piece. Their position in society is one of combatting atrocities. Yet, they are watchingas a human being burns half to death with indifference and doing nothing to help. The dark shades of black, grey, and red emphasize the orchestrated violence by South Africans againstother Africans, which is a social justice issue. The concept of this artwork shows how crucial it is for all South Africans to have tolerance, acceptance, and respect for African foreign nationals aswe do for non-African foreign nationals who have the right to reside in peace in South Africa.
