Collectible Description

A new configuration, a new device that emerges from the reading of the material, from that process of understanding that conversation or dance. The frailty of the bodies is shown through the setting, in order to make visible a possible state in an intimidating act. The interruption is a time suspension of the execution of a process, where we may find endless variables in their proximate state. This somehow provokes an intimidating act, where a system of devices configured as simulacra that become a body itself, to describe moments that enable the liminal theatricality. These mechanisms result in a multiplicity of gestures that question us from some fluctuations that manifest as a restored quotation that happens in a real event.

Artist Biography

The Silent Dialogue of Form and Language

Born on September 20, 1964, in the vibrant landscape of Montevideo, Uruguay, Pablo Román Pérez y Torres carries within him a rich tapestry of cultural identities. His life has been defined by a profound movement between worlds, holding Uruguayan, Spanish, and German citizenships—a dual heritage that serves as the very foundation of his creative consciousness. This multicultural upbringing, marked by a relocation to Spain at the tender age of eight, allowed him to navigate the linguistic nuances of Valencia and Barcelona, eventually leading him to the academic rigor of Germany. Such a life of transition did more than just provide him with multilingual fluency; it instilled in him a deep appreciation for the subtle shifts in meaning that occur when one moves between different modes of communication, whether through spoken word or visual form.

Before finding his voice in the realm of visual arts, Pérez y Torres established himself as a master of linguistic precision. His professional journey as a translator and interpreter—spanning Spanish, Catalan, German, English, and Italian—became an unexpected precursor to his artistic practice. The meticulous care required to bridge disparate languages mirrors the way he approaches his canvases and installations. In his work, much like in translation, there is a search for the essence of a message, a desire to capture the "truth" that exists between the lines. This background as a lecturer at the Sprachen & Dolmutschers Institut Munich further refined his ability to analyze structure and syntax, elements that would later manifest as geometric precision and textural contrast in his aesthetic compositions.

Minimalism and the Architecture of Stillness

The artistic vision of Pablo Román Pérez y Torres is a deliberate study in restraint. Rejecting the clamor of excessive ornamentation, he gravitates toward a minimalist language that seeks to capture moments of suspended time. His work often functions as a meditation on stillness, inviting the viewer into a space of profound contemplation. Drawing significant inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, his compositions prioritize functional beauty and the inherent strength of simple forms. By utilizing materials such as metal and fabric, he creates a tactile dialogue between the industrial and the organic, using geometric precision to ground the ethereal themes of his work.

In his most celebrated pieces, the artist explores the tension between presence and absence. His notable works include:

  • Gravitations: A captivating exploration of space and force, this piece utilizes a color palette that evokes the vastness of the cosmos. It functions as a new configuration of artifacts, where the montage technique reveals the frailty of bodies and the subtle oscillations of movement within a seemingly static system.
  • El acto inmóvil (The Motionless Act): Presented often as an installation, this work challenges traditional artistic conventions by focusing on the concept of interruption. It serves as a device to explore the liminality of existence, using a system of simulated bodies and devices to describe moments of theatricality that emerge from the very act of observation.

Through these works, Pérez y Torres achieves a rare feat: he makes the invisible visible. He captures the "interruption" in life—that fleeting second where execution pauses and endless variables become apparent. His art does not merely represent a subject; it creates a state of being, a way to experience the profound implications of inactivity. In the intersection of metal, fabric, and light, he finds a way to translate the complex, often intimidating, fluctuations of our universe into a language of quiet, enduring beauty.
