Giuseppe Riccardo Maggioni (1862-1934), son of a fabric shopkeeper, graduated in accounting, specialized in Switzerland, London and Paris, learning three languages and opened a chemical and colonial import-export company back in Milan. After retiring from business, he left the Lombard capital, dividing his time between Nice and Genoa, where he died. In his will he appoints the Ospedale Maggiore as the universal heir of his substantial patrimony, providing legacies of 25,000 lire for various charitable and welfare institutions and the annuity for his wife. The commemorative portrait is assigned to Remo Taccani, a self-taught painter (he is a failed engineer) but who had long attended Napoleon Grady

Artist Biography

The Soul of Lombardy: The Life and Vision of Remo Taccani

In the heart of Milan, a city defined by its industrial vigor and historical depth, the painter Remo Taccani (1891–1973) found his true calling. While his early academic pursuits led him toward the structured world of engineering, the call of the canvas proved irresistible. Born into a family where art was woven into the very fabric of daily life—his father being a painter himself—Taccani possessed an innate sensitivity to the nuances of light and form. This early connection to the creative spirit eventually guided him away from scientific precision and toward the prestigious Brera Academy. It was here, under the mentorship of Luigi Napoleone Grady, that Taccani began to absorb the transformative principles of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, learning to see the world not as a collection of static objects, but as a fleeting dance of color and atmosphere.

Taccani’s artistic journey was never one of seeking grand, dramatic spectacles or the overwhelming scale of mountain ranges. Instead, his gaze remained intimately fixed upon the quiet, rhythmic beauty of the Lombardy landscape. He possessed a rare ability to elevate the mundane into the magnificent, finding profound poetry in the everyday scenes of rural Italian life. His canvases became windows into a serene world of fishing villages nestled along tranquil canals, sun-drenched olive groves, and humble churches where the light seemed to linger on ancient frescoes. Through his meticulous brushwork, he captured the palpable sensation of the Lombard air—the humidity near the water, the warmth of the golden hour, and the stillness of a summer afternoon.

Technique and the Impressionist Legacy

The mastery of Taccani lies in his delicate balance between meticulous observation and impressionistic fluidity. He did not merely paint a landscape; he painted the light that inhabited it. His technique involved a sophisticated use of color palettes designed to mirror the subtle shifts in natural illumination, allowing him to convey the passage of time within a single frame. This dedication to capturing the ephemeral qualities of nature resulted in works that resonate with an authentic sense of place and peace.

Beyond his landscapes, Taccani’s repertoire included notable portraiture, demonstrating his versatility as a chronicler of both nature and humanity. One such significant work is his Portrait of Giuseppe Riccardo Maggioni, a piece that connects the artist to the social fabric of Milanese history. Through these portraits, Taccani applied the same sensitivity to human character that he applied to the landscape, seeking the inner light of his subjects just as he sought it in the Lombard sky.

While Taccani may have remained largely unrecognized by the broader international art market during his lifetime, his historical significance is preserved through several key legacies:

  • The Brera Connection: His training at the Brera Academy under Grady placed him within a vital lineage of Italian modernism.
  • Regional Preservation: His work serves as a visual archive of the traditional Lombard landscape, capturing a way of life and a natural beauty that has since been altered by modernization.
  • Institutional Recognition: His contributions to the Italian art scene are honored through collections such as the Fondazione Cariplo, ensuring his vision continues to inspire new generations of art lovers.

Today, the works of Remo Taccani stand as a testament to the power of quiet observation. He reminds us that true beauty is often found in the overlooked corners of our world—in the reflection of a canal, the shadow of an olive tree, or the soft glow of a setting sun over a Milanese village. His legacy is one of tranquility, authenticity, and an enduring love for the Italian earth.
