Collectible Description

Santiago is a comprehensive furniture collection designed for people with reduced mobility, suitable for both home and professional care settings. The collection is the result of an intensive year — long engagement with seniors, persons with reduced mobility and carers. With their input, TON has developed a fresh, comfortable and robust collection that responds to specific use — related challenges and ensures easy maintenance and manipulation. The Santiago collection has been tested with the same stress and mechanical tests as all other TON products.A square or rectangular dining table with a clean design and wellconsidered details. The absence of a table apron makes it easy to pair the table with chairs with armrests or with standard wheelchairs. The bottom of the tabletop has a groove on each side to assist diners in pushing themselves back and/or rising from the table.

Artist Biography

A Synthesis of Tradition and Innovation: The World of René Šulc

René Šulc, a Czech designer born in 1978 in Mladá Boleslav, represents a compelling intersection of time-honored craftsmanship and forward-thinking technology. His work isn’t merely about creating objects; it's about reimagining the very essence of functional art, breathing new life into established techniques while embracing the possibilities of modern design. Šulc’s journey began with a foundational education in toy-making at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Prague, an experience that instilled within him a deep appreciation for form, material, and the playful potential of creation. This early focus on tactile artistry would later be beautifully interwoven with his more formal studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and the University of Technology in Zlín.

Formative Years and Artistic Development

Šulc’s academic path was deliberately diverse, reflecting a desire to understand design from multiple perspectives. The rigorous training in toy-making provided an intimate understanding of production processes and the importance of user experience. His subsequent explorations at the Academy and University broadened his scope, introducing him to architectural principles and advanced manufacturing techniques. This unique blend allowed Šulc to develop a distinctive approach—one that prioritizes not only aesthetic appeal but also structural integrity and practical application. He wasn’t content with simply designing beautiful forms; he sought to *improve* upon them, enhancing their functionality and refining the qualities of their creation.

Collaboration with Ton A.S. and International Recognition

A pivotal moment in Šulc’s career came through his collaboration with Ton A.S., a renowned Czech furniture manufacturer steeped in over a century of bentwood tradition. This partnership proved to be remarkably fruitful, allowing Šulc to apply his innovative vision to an established legacy. He didn't seek to dismantle the core principles of Ton’s craftsmanship but rather to elevate them, introducing subtle yet significant refinements that resonated with contemporary sensibilities. His designs for lighting and furniture quickly garnered international acclaim, demonstrating a universal appeal rooted in their elegant simplicity and thoughtful functionality.

Key Characteristics and Design Philosophy

Šulc's work is characterized by a harmonious balance between organic forms and precise engineering. He often employs natural materials—particularly wood—celebrating the inherent beauty of grain and texture. His designs are rarely ostentatious; instead, they exude a quiet confidence born from meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of material properties. A core tenet of his philosophy is sustainability, reflected in his commitment to responsible sourcing and durable construction. He believes that well-designed objects should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also built to last, minimizing their environmental impact.

A Lasting Legacy: Functional Art for the Modern World

René Šulc’s contribution extends beyond individual designs; he represents a new generation of Czech designers who are successfully bridging the gap between tradition and innovation. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, solidifying his position as a leading figure in contemporary design. He continues to push boundaries, exploring new materials and techniques while remaining steadfastly committed to his core principles of functionality, craftsmanship, and sustainability. Šulc’s legacy is one of thoughtful creation—a testament to the power of design to enhance our lives and enrich our surroundings. His influence can be seen in a growing appreciation for minimalist aesthetics, durable construction, and the enduring beauty of natural materials.
