Artist Biography

Rikhi Ram Originals: Guardians of Indian Musical Tradition

Rikhi Ram Originals stands as a testament to India’s enduring legacy in musical instrument craftsmanship. Established over a century ago, this Delhi-based company isn't merely a manufacturer; it’s a living repository of techniques passed down through generations, embodying the very soul of Indian classical music. Their unwavering dedication to preserving and perfecting traditional instruments has cemented their place as one of India’s oldest musical instrument makers – a distinction that speaks volumes about their contribution to cultural heritage.
  • Early Beginnings: Founded in New Delhi around 1920 by Shri Ram Lal Ji, Rikhi Ram Originals began humbly, focusing on producing simple folk instruments before gradually expanding its repertoire to include sophisticated classical instruments like sitars and sarods.
  • A Family Legacy: The company’s success is rooted in a family tradition of instrument making, with each successive generation upholding the highest standards of artistry and precision. Shri Ram Lal Ji's son, Shri Kishan Lal Ji, continued his father’s work, establishing Rikhi Ram Musical Instrument Mfg. Co.
  • Technique & Materials: Rikhi Ram Originals distinguishes itself through its meticulous craftsmanship. They utilize locally sourced teakwood and sandalwood – materials revered for their tonal qualities – combined with traditional inlay techniques passed down through generations. The painstaking process involves carving intricate designs, applying resin glue, and painstakingly embedding precious stones like jasper and agate into the instrument’s surface.
  • Influence & Recognition: Rikhi Ram Originals has garnered acclaim from musicians worldwide who appreciate instruments crafted with authenticity and artistry. Their instruments have graced stages across India and internationally, contributing to performances that celebrate Indian musical heritage.

The Art of Sitar Making

The sitar, arguably the most iconic instrument of Hindustani classical music, is a complex amalgamation of strings, resonators, and tuning pegs—a sonic marvel achieved through masterful craftsmanship. Rikhi Ram Originals’ sitars exemplify this tradition perfectly. Each sitar undergoes an exhaustive process of preparation, starting with selecting seasoned teakwood – known for its stability and resonance – followed by meticulous carving and inlay work that reflects intricate geometric patterns inspired by Mughal art. The tuning system itself is a testament to centuries-old knowledge, requiring precise adjustments to achieve the desired tonal palette. Reproductions from Rikhi Ram Originals capture this essence beautifully.
  • Resonance Chambers: The resonators – typically made of gourd or metal – amplify sound vibrations and contribute significantly to the instrument’s timbre.
  • Tuning Peg Mechanism:The tuning pegs, crafted with brass and meticulously adjusted, allow for precise pitch control—a cornerstone of sitar performance.

Beyond Tradition: Adapting to Modern Music

While firmly rooted in tradition, Rikhi Ram Originals recognizes the importance of adapting to contemporary musical styles. They continue to produce instruments that meet the demands of modern musicians while upholding the fundamental principles of tonal quality and craftsmanship. This commitment ensures that Indian classical music retains its vibrancy for future generations.
