Collectible Description

A set of three murals based on childhood songs from artist Ronald Apriyan’s early years span the staircase landings in SAM at 8Q. These nursery rhymes recall for him beautiful memories, memories that he hopes his children will also have through passing these songs on. Ronald views such timeless songs as a means of transmission of hopes and prayers from parents to their children, especially in a time of change. The songs address different stages of a child’s development, with these stages reflected chronologically in the paintings from the first landing to the third. Collectively, the vibrant murals celebrate the joy of childhood innocence – a time of spontaneous curiosity and imagination. Even as the adorable surreal characters are created to appeal to children, it is also imagined that the rich detail and imagery may reawaken a sense of wonder in adults.

Artist Biography

Ronald Apriyan: A Child’s World, Rendered in Color

Born in Prabumulih, Indonesia, in 1979, Ronald Apriyan's artistic journey is deeply rooted in the vibrant tapestry of his childhood and cultural heritage. His work isn’t merely a depiction of scenes; it’s an intimate exploration of innocence, wonder, and the quiet beauty found within everyday experiences—a lens through which he revisits and reimagines the world as seen by a child. From early influences to his current, evolving style, Apriyan consistently returns to themes that resonate with universal human emotions, creating paintings that are both deeply personal and universally appealing.

Apriyan’s formative years were spent immersed in Indonesian culture, an experience that profoundly shaped his artistic sensibilities. This exposure instilled a sensitivity to color, texture, and the rhythms of life—elements which he skillfully integrates into his work. His early exhibitions at venues like the Singapore Art Museum and Art Central Hong Kong marked significant milestones, introducing his distinctive style to a wider international audience. These initial successes solidified his commitment to exploring themes of childhood and its inherent magic, setting the stage for a career dedicated to capturing these fleeting moments of joy and contemplation.

The Language of Color and Texture

Apriyan’s paintings are immediately recognizable by their rich palette and tactile quality. He masterfully employs layers of color and texture, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into his scenes. This isn't simply about representation; it’s about evoking emotion through visual means. The use of vibrant hues is balanced with subtle gradations, lending each piece an ethereal quality. His technique blends traditional oil painting methods with modern approaches, resulting in a style that feels both familiar and refreshingly innovative.

A key element of his artistic vocabulary lies in the recurring presence of children and animals. These subjects aren’t presented as static figures but rather as active participants within a narrative—often imbued with a sense of playful curiosity or quiet contemplation. The juxtaposition of these elements – the vulnerability of childhood alongside the inherent wisdom of the animal world – serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving innocence and appreciating the simple joys of life.

Notable Works and Recurring Themes

Among Apriyan’s most celebrated works is “The Song of Life,” a monumental mural that graces the staircase landings at the Singapore Art Museum. This piece, part of a larger series inspired by childhood songs from his early years, exemplifies his ability to transform simple melodies into powerful visual narratives. The mural captures the essence of youthful exuberance and the enduring power of memory.

Beyond “The Song of Life,” Apriyan’s oeuvre includes numerous other captivating paintings that explore similar themes. His work consistently showcases a deep appreciation for the natural world, often depicting animals in serene settings—a testament to his belief in their inherent beauty and wisdom. Recurring motifs include playful interactions between children and animals, suggesting a harmonious connection between humanity and nature.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Apriyan’s art has garnered recognition through various platforms, including ArtsDot, where his works are available for purchase. His dedication to preserving the spirit of childhood is evident in his continued exploration of these themes across diverse mediums. His solo exhibition at Element Art Space further solidified his position as a rising star within the contemporary art scene.

Furthermore, his work has been featured in online galleries and collections, demonstrating a growing appreciation for his unique artistic vision. The inclusion of “The Song of Life” within the Singapore Art Museum’s collection underscores its significance as a significant contribution to public art and a celebration of childhood innocence.
