Born in 1971 in Muttukulam, a small hamlet nestled within the Alappuzha district of Kerala, India, Suresh Muthukulam – also known as S. Suresh Kumar – is more than just an artist; he’s a custodian of a profoundly rich and ancient artistic tradition. His journey is one of dedicated apprenticeship, tireless practice, and a deep reverence for the intricate world of Kerala mural painting. From his humble beginnings, Muthukulam has risen to become a leading figure in preserving and promoting this unique art form, captivating audiences both within India and across the globe.

Muthukulam’s artistic path began at a remarkably young age. Unlike many artists who receive formal training later in life, he was immersed in the techniques of Kerala muralism from childhood. Raised as the sixth child to K. Sukumaran and Pulamaja, his early exposure to the vibrant colors and symbolic narratives inherent in these paintings laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication. He began painting independently at a very young age, demonstrating an innate talent that quickly blossomed under the guidance of master artists.

The Gurukula Tradition and Early Training

Prior to his current role as Chief Mural Artist at Vasthuvidya Gurukulam, he served as a visiting lecturer at the Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts in Mavelikara, further solidifying his understanding and appreciation for the art form.

His work on Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March is also part of the Gandhi Museum Collection in New Delhi. Beyond these prominent examples, his murals grace temples and hotel lobbies throughout twelve different countries, spreading the beauty and wisdom of Kerala muralism across the globe.

Today, Muthukulam continues to live and work in Kerala, actively involved in preserving this ancient art form through Vasthuvidya Gurukulam.
