Collectible Description

Rare object, much sought after by collectors. The head has a carved bas-relief scene depicting a deity in a palanquin drawn by a dragon. This bird is a subspecies of the Hornbill that has a red horn on the beak, with a texture similar to ivory. The use of the hornbill horn became very popular in China and the East Indies, especially from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) where it was used to carve artefacts held or offered as a symbol of power and status, although the first records identify its use in China as early as the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). Due to its rarity, the Chinese considered hornbill ivory more valuable than gold, jade, or real ivory. Sculptures like this were also widely traded, or offered as tributes, by Chinese travelers in the West. In such a way that this bird, currently protected, was practically extinct.

Artist Biography

The Enigmatic World of Thañí + Silat: Messages Carved from the Forest

Thañí + Silat, a collaborative artistic duo whose very name – “The Message That Comes From The Forest” – hints at the profound source of their inspiration. Little is publicly known about the individual artists behind this moniker; they deliberately maintain an air of mystery, allowing their creations to speak for themselves. This intentional obscurity only deepens the allure surrounding their work, which often manifests as exquisitely carved objects imbued with a potent blend of Balinese/Indonesian artistry and spiritual symbolism.

Origins and Artistic Practice

The duo’s practice centers around transforming natural materials – particularly bone, wood, and horn – into intricate bas-relief carvings. While the exact timeline of their collaboration remains elusive, examples of their work date back to at least the 1920s, suggesting a sustained engagement with traditional carving techniques passed down through generations. Their pieces are not merely decorative; they function as vessels for storytelling, religious belief, and cultural memory. The choice of materials is significant: bone often represents ancestry and connection to the spirit world, while wood embodies life force and growth. The use of horn, exemplified by a rare 1920 Hornbill skull carving, speaks to power, status, and the natural order.

Balinese/Indonesian Influences & Symbolism

A defining characteristic of Thañí + Silat’s work is its deep connection to Balinese and Indonesian artistic traditions. The carvings frequently depict deities, mythical creatures – particularly dragons – and scenes from local folklore. The intricate detail and refined craftsmanship are hallmarks of the region's renowned woodcarving heritage. However, their art isn’t simply a replication of existing forms; it represents a unique synthesis of traditional motifs with a distinctly personal vision. The dragon imagery, for instance, is not merely ornamental but carries layers of meaning related to protection, fertility, and cosmic power. The bas-relief carving on the Hornbill skull showcases this beautifully – a deity intertwined with a dragon, suggesting a harmonious balance between the earthly and spiritual realms.

A Collector’s Dream: Rarity & Historical Significance

Works by Thañí + Silat are exceptionally rare. Their deliberate anonymity and limited production contribute to their scarcity, making each piece highly sought after by collectors of ethnographic art and those interested in Southeast Asian spirituality. The 1920 Hornbill skull is a prime example of the duo’s historical significance; it offers a glimpse into a specific moment in time – a period when traditional artistry was flourishing alongside colonial influences. These carvings serve as tangible links to a rich cultural past, preserving stories and beliefs that might otherwise have been lost.

The Enduring Message

Despite the lack of biographical detail, the art of Thañí + Silat resonates powerfully with viewers. Their work transcends geographical boundaries, speaking to universal themes of spirituality, ancestry, and the interconnectedness of all things. The “message” they send from the forest is one of reverence for nature, respect for tradition, and a deep understanding of the human condition. Their carvings are not just objects; they are portals to another world – a world where art, religion, and mythology converge. The enduring appeal of their creations lies in this ability to evoke wonder, inspire contemplation, and remind us of the power of storytelling through artistic expression. The mystery surrounding Thañí + Silat only adds to the magic, inviting viewers to interpret their work on a deeply personal level.
