Written by Antonio Machado (1875-1939). “Flies” appeared in Machado’s first publication, Soledades (1907), in a section titled “Humorisms, fantasies, annotations.” A Spanish poet born in the city of Sevilla, he became associated with a group of novelists, poets, essayists, and philosophers active in Spain at the time of the Spanish-American War (1898), known as the Generation of 1898. They were committed to cultural and aesthetic renewal, and often linked with modernism.Antonio Martorell is a multifaceted and versatile Puerto Rican artist who has distinguished himself as a printmaker, painter, draughtsman, creator of installations, designer of scenarios and costumes, writer, and illustrator.
