An adventurous, daring woman, Harriet Quimby (1875-1912) was the first female to earn her pilot’s license in 1911. Harriet first became interested in flight when she attended an aviation show in New York. Harriet quickly learned to fly and passed her pilot’s test. Shortly after earning her license, she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel in 1912. Harriet was also the spokeswoman for Vin Fiz grape soda, and was depicted around the nation in her trademark purple satin flying suit.
