Early Life and Career
- Born: Birmingham, United Kingdom (1746), baptized May 20, 1746 in St Martin's parish church.
- Parents: Richard Ashford.
- Moved to Dublin, Ireland, in 1764 at age eighteen.
- Initially worked in the Ordnance Office, checking armaments.
- Married around 1775; had two sons and one daughter.
- Early works included flower paintings and still lifes.
- Exhibited with the Society of Artists on William Street from around 1767.
Development as a Landscape Painter
- From 1772, began exhibiting landscapes, receiving prizes at the Dublin Royal Society of Arts.
- Became a professional landscape painter after 1772.
- Emerged as the pre-eminent landscape painter in Ireland following Thomas Roberts' death in 1778.
- Lived in a house designed by James Gandon from around 1792.
- His style was influenced by painters such as Claude Lorraine and Richard Wilson, characterized by a warm continental palette.
Major Achievements and Recognition
- President of the Irish Society of Artists: Elected in 1813.
- First President of the Royal Hibernian Academy: Elected in 1823.
- Painted a set of views in and around Mount Merrion for the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (around 1806).
- Exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy in London from 1775.
- His works were exhibited by institutions such as the Society of Artists in Ireland, the Academy of Artists in Dublin, and the Cork Society for Promoting Fine Arts.
Artistic Style and Influences
- Topographical Views: Primarily focused on depicting country seats and well-ordered parks.
- Influences: Claude Lorraine (use of light and atmosphere), Richard Wilson (compositional structure).
- Characteristics: Warm palette, emphasis on order and elegance in landscapes.
- Collaboration: Worked with John Thomas Serres from around 1790 to incorporate figure and marine painting elements.
Later Life and Legacy
- Continued to paint until approximately 1821.
- Died on April 17, 1824, at his home in Sandymount.
- His work is held in the National Gallery of Ireland and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
- Donations to the Irish Heritage Trust in 2008 highlighted renewed interest in his art.
- Influenced later Irish landscape painters such as James Arthur O'Connor.
