The Japanese word “Kuso” refers to something that is very funny, ridiculous, stupid or prankish. The artist uses a Kuso approach when deconstructing the Chinese characters that make up the title “Seven Rainbow Faires” into five separate and independent characters: Cai, Hong, Qi, Xian, Zi.At the same time, he also uses the color of the various elements; metal, wood, water, fire, and earth – white, green, blue, red, yellow - as his focus colors. Despite using these elements, the artist does not attempt to enage in philosophical discussion or offer definitons. In other words, this is more a playful and superficial work, highlighting the fact that the fashionable young people who gather in Ximending and their Kuso type behavior is an accurate reflection of the popular sub culture phenomenon.

Artist Biography

Yeh Li-Yi: Bridging Nature and Perception

Yeh Li-Yi (born Taipei, Taiwan, 1973) stands as a compelling figure in contemporary Taiwanese art, recognized for her distinctive approach to exploring the interplay between natural landscapes and human consciousness. Her artistic journey began with formal training at the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts, National Tainan University of Arts, where she honed her skills in sculpture and mixed media—a foundation that would prove crucial to her subsequent explorations into conceptually driven artworks.
  • Early Influences: Li Yi’s formative years were marked by exposure to classical Chinese painting traditions, particularly landscape art, which instilled within her a deep appreciation for observation and capturing the essence of natural beauty. This influence is palpable in her recurring motifs—often featuring serene mountain vistas interwoven with delicate figures—reflecting a desire to convey not merely visual representation but also emotional resonance.
  • Sculptural Exploration: Li Yi’s sculptural practice distinguishes itself through its meticulous attention to detail and material experimentation. She frequently utilizes ceramic clay, combining it with resin and other mediums to create textured surfaces that mimic the organic forms of plants and rocks. Her sculptures aren't simply representations; they are tactile experiences designed to engage viewers physically and intellectually.
  • “The Seven Rainbow Fairies” – A Symbolic Narrative: Perhaps Li Yi’s most celebrated work is “The Seven Rainbow Fairies,” a series of ceramic sculptures that encapsulate her artistic vision. These fantastical creatures embody a complex symbolism—representing resilience, transformation, and the interconnectedness of ecosystems—while simultaneously confronting viewers with questions about perception and imagination.

Exploring Scene/Object Relationships

At the core of Li Yi’s oeuvre lies an unwavering fascination with “scene/object relationships”—a concept borrowed from Gestalt psychology that emphasizes how our brains organize visual information into coherent wholes. She meticulously arranges elements within her artworks—often juxtaposing natural forms against stylized human figures—to provoke contemplation about how we perceive and interpret the world around us. This deliberate layering of imagery invites viewers to consider not just what is seen but also what is implied beneath the surface.
  • Material Dialogue: Li Yi’s masterful manipulation of materials underscores her commitment to conveying nuanced meanings. The contrasting textures of ceramic clay and resin serve as a visual metaphor for the tension between stability and change—themes that permeate her artistic explorations.
  • Conceptual Depth: Beyond mere aesthetic appeal, Li Yi's artworks grapple with profound philosophical questions concerning identity, memory, and the role of art in shaping our understanding of reality. Her sculptures are not merely decorative objects; they are vehicles for conveying complex ideas about human experience.

Recognition and Exhibitions

Yeh Li-Yi’s artistic achievements have garnered considerable acclaim within Taiwan and internationally. Solo exhibitions at galleries like 44 Gallery in Taipei and Daedam Art Center in Damyang, South Korea, have showcased her distinctive style and conceptual rigor—establishing her as a prominent voice in contemporary Taiwanese art. Her work has been featured in group shows across Asia, furthering its visibility and cementing its place within the broader artistic landscape.
  • Notable Exhibitions: “Scene / Object” at 44 Gallery (2015) presented a selection of her ceramic sculptures alongside photographic prints—demonstrating Li Yi’s ability to synthesize visual mediums into cohesive narratives. Similarly, “The Preface of Damyang Pavilion Series” (2014) explored themes of environmental stewardship and artistic contemplation within the context of Korean landscape art.

Legacy and Continuing Artistic Practice

Yeh Li-Yi continues to refine her artistic practice, driven by a relentless pursuit of innovation and a steadfast dedication to conveying profound emotional truths through her sculptural creations. Her work stands as testament to the enduring power of observation—the ability to perceive beauty in unexpected places—and to transforming raw materials into evocative symbols that resonate with viewers on multiple levels. She remains committed to pushing boundaries within contemporary art, ensuring that her artistic legacy persists as a beacon of creativity and intellectual engagement.
