Artist Biography
Yi Lantai: A Pioneer of Qing Dynasty Copperplate Printing
Yi Lantai (Yilantai), born around 1749, was a Manchu court artist who stands as a testament to the transformative influence of Western artistic techniques on Chinese art during the Qianlong reign (1735-1796). His formative years were spent under the tutelage of Giuseppe Castiglione, arguably the most celebrated Jesuit missionary and artist serving the Qing imperial court. This mentorship proved pivotal in shaping Lantai’s artistic vision and propelling him to become a leading figure in establishing copperplate engraving as a viable medium for documenting monumental architectural projects within China.- Early Training & Influence of Castiglione: Lantai's education began with Castiglione, who had been dispatched by the Vatican to Beijing to foster diplomatic relations and promote Catholicism. Castiglione’s groundbreaking approach to art – blending European Renaissance ideals with Chinese aesthetics – profoundly impacted Lantai’s artistic sensibilities. He championed a style characterized by meticulous detail and tonal gradation, mirroring Castiglione's own masterful execution of Western engraving methods.
- The Yuanmingyuan Project & Engraving Innovation: Lantai’s most enduring legacy rests upon his contribution to the ambitious Yuanmingyuan (Garden of Pleasant Tranquility) project undertaken by Emperor Qianlong. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive visual record of this grand undertaking, Lantai spearheaded the production of an unprecedented series of 18 copperplate engravings—the largest printed works produced in China at that time—representing the palace’s western section.
