Em 1874 o imperador Dom Pedro II o nomeou primeiro Barão de Santo Ângelo, quando exercía funções diplomáticas em Lisboa, onde viria a morrer, em 1879.Hoje se sabe que o autor desta tela é Manuel de Araújo Porto Alegre, embora antes ela fosse atribuída a Louis Auguste Moreau, artista ativo no Brasil a partir do final da década de 1830.
