Mohamad Abumeis was born in Tripoli, Libya in 1970 and arrived in Australia in 2009. He has been exhibiting for the past two decades throughout North Africa, the USA and Europe, including the 2005 Napoli Biennale. Mohamed recently completed his Doctor of Fine Art at RMIT. Transnational Advocacy Space and Place: Roles of Capitalism belongs to a body of ‘Melbourne’ paintings which comment on social values, culture, politics, religion and art. Abumeis references iconic and historical events from the past as a vehicle for exploring the role of spaces and places in contemporary artistic society through his highly skilled application of colour, shape and composition. The significance of connecting with places reveals a kind of manifestation of the multilayers of Australian contemporary society. This colourful arena celebrates the kind of transnational and multicultural rhythms of twenty-first century living, and explores the possibilities of finding a place in this often complex social, cultural, financial and political system.

A Journey Through Color and Connection

The life of Mohamed Abumeis is a profound testament to the power of movement and the enduring strength of cultural identity. Born in the vibrant atmosphere of Tripoli, Libya, in 1970, Abumeis began his formal artistic odyssey at the Faculty of Fine Art in Tripoli, where he graduated with honors in 1994. His early years were defined by a rigorous dedication to mastering the fundamentals of painting and drawing, yet his spirit was always destined for a much broader stage. As his curiosity about the essence of place grew, so did his geographical reach, eventually leading him from the shores of North Africa to the academic halls of Manchester Metropolitan University in England, where he earned a Master of Arts in 2004. This period of international study enriched his technical repertoire and prepared him for a transformative relocation to Melbourne, Australia, in 2009.

Abumeis’s arrival in Australia marked a pivotal chapter in his development, as he began to weave the diverse threads of his North African heritage with the multicultural rhythms of contemporary Australian life. His work serves as a bridge between continents, reflecting a deep-seated passion for capturing how landscapes and urban spaces hold the memories of those who inhabit them. Through his practice, he explores the complex intersections of identity, memory, and cultural exchange, creating a visual language that speaks to the universal human experience of belonging.

The Materiality of Memory and Place

In the hands of Abumeis, oil paint becomes more than just a medium; it is a visceral tool for storytelling. His canvases are characterized by a pulsating energy, where thick textures and vivid color palettes invite the viewer into a sensory dialogue. He utilizes the materiality of the paint itself to reflect the layers of history and social complexity found within the spaces he depicts. Whether referencing iconic historical events or the quiet nuances of a modern cityscape, his compositions are meticulously crafted to evoke emotional responses and provoke thought regarding our place in a globalized world.

A significant portion of his recent work, particularly his "Melbourne" series, delves into the socio-political landscapes of the twenty-first century. In pieces such as Transnational Advocacy Space and Place: Roles of Capitalism, Abumeis uses color, shape, and composition to comment on the intricate systems of religion, politics, and art that shape our contemporary existence. His ability to synthesize complex narratives—ranging from the role of capitalism to the nuances of multiculturalism—allows him to transform a single canvas into a profound sociological inquiry.

Global Recognition and Lasting Legacy

The impact of Abumeis’s vision has resonated far beyond the borders of Australia. His exhibitions have graced prestigious galleries across an impressive array of nations, including Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Italy, Spain, France, England, and Australia. This global presence underscores his commitment to a transnational artistic dialogue, making him a significant figure in the contemporary art scene of both Africa and Oceania. His scholarly contributions are equally notable, having earned a Doctor of Fine Art from RMIT University in 2014, a milestone that solidified his status as both an accomplished creator and a dedicated researcher.

The enduring significance of his work is perhaps most beautifully captured by its inclusion in permanent collections, such as the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) in Melbourne. This recognition acknowledges not only his technical mastery but also the profound cultural impact of his art. Through his evocative landscapes and layered narratives, Mohamed Abumeis continues to inspire viewers to look closer at the world around them, finding beauty and meaning in the complex, colorful tapestry of our shared human journey.
