In the attic of his parents’ home in Basel Buddy and Gerti Elias discovered thousands of letters and photographs that offer a unique insight in the lives of the forbears and family of Buddy Elias and Anne Frank. These documents and the everyday objects owned by the family are now located in the Jewish Museum Frankfurt. This loan gives expression to the family’s bond with the city of Frankfurt, from where they were once forced to flee. This photo by Barbara Klemm shows Buddy Elias and his wife Gerti in the living room of their home in Basel. The painting Opernplatz in Frankfurt by Jakob Nussbaum hangs above the sofa. Paintings and photographs are also part of the Family Frank Center and will be exhibited in the Jewish Museum Frankfurt from summer 2019 onwards.

Artist Biography

Barbara Klemm: A Pioneer of German Photojournalism

Barbara Klemm, born December 27, 1939, in Münster/Westfalen, Germany, stands as a monumental figure within the landscape of German photojournalism. Her artistic journey began amidst the formative influences of her father, Fritz Klemm—a painter and professor at Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts—who instilled in her an appreciation for visual storytelling and artistic expression. This early exposure would prove pivotal in shaping her distinctive approach to documenting history.
  • Early Years & Education: Klemm’s formative years were marked by a deep immersion in the arts, fostering a keen observational eye and a sensitivity to capturing fleeting moments with precision.
  • Photography Training: Recognizing her talent for visual representation, she honed her skills at Julia Bauer’s portrait studio in Karlsruhe, laying the groundwork for her future career as a press photographer.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Years (1959-2005)

Her professional life commenced in 1959 with a position at Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), where she served for an astounding 45 years. During this period, Klemm became FAZ’s editorial photographer, dedicating herself to chronicling the pivotal events shaping contemporary German history—from the turbulent era of ’68 through the reunification process and beyond.
  • Documenting History: Klemm's photographs captured the essence of significant moments, reflecting both the triumphs and tribulations of her time. Her images served as powerful visual records of political movements, social transformations, and cultural shifts.
  • Recognition & Awards: Her unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity garnered widespread acclaim, culminating in prestigious honors including Fellowship of the Academy of Arts, Berlin; the Hugo Erfurth Prize; and the Hessian Cultural Prize. Notably, she was inducted into Leica Hall of Fame in 2012 for her contribution to photojournalism.

Leica Hall of Fame & Artistic Style

Klemm’s artistic philosophy centers around capturing immediacy—often opting for single photographs rather than expansive series. Her distinctive style is characterized by black-and-white analog photography, prioritizing raw emotion and unfiltered observation. She eschews elaborate manipulation techniques, allowing the inherent drama of each scene to emerge organically.
  • Emphasis on Emotion: Klemm’s photographs convey profound emotional resonance, conveying narratives that transcend mere visual representation. They invite viewers to contemplate the complexities of human experience and the enduring power of memory.
  • Technical Precision: Despite her eschewal of digital tools, Klemm maintains meticulous technical precision—capturing images with remarkable clarity and detail while preserving the tactile quality of film photography.

Notable Achievements & Legacy

Barbara Klemm’s influence extends far beyond her journalistic endeavors. She holds an honorary professorship at Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, reflecting her dedication to artistic education and fostering creativity. Furthermore, she was elected as a member of the Order “Pour le Mérite”—a testament to her distinguished service to Germany.
  • Honors & Recognition: Klemm’s accomplishments have been recognized internationally, solidifying her position as one of Germany's foremost photographers and cementing her place in photographic history.
  • Continuing Influence: Her pioneering approach to photojournalism continues to inspire aspiring artists and journalists alike—demonstrating the enduring power of analog photography to convey truth and emotion with unparalleled impact.
Klemm’s work stands as a beacon of artistic integrity, reminding us that profound storytelling can be achieved through simple yet powerful visual narratives.
