Five hundred years ago, a long hoped-for journey began in Seville. Its aim was to reach the mythical east and the Maluku (formerly the Moluccas or Spice) Islands, via the uncharted part of the globe. This journey, begun in 1519 by Ferdinand Magellan, concluded three years later, becoming the longest journey of its time. It was the first circumnavigation of the globe, completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano and the crew of the Victoria in 1522. The exhibition, The Longest Journey: The First Circumnavigation of the Globe, was organized by Acción Cultural Española and Spain’s Ministry of Culture and Sport. It was based on original documents held in the General Archive of the Indies in Seville, accounts of the journey written by the crew, and other documents, letters, and accounts housed in various European libraries and archives. Exhibition design by Tannhauser Estudio. Photographs taken in the General Archive of the Indies, Seville.

Artist Biography

The Enigmatic Figure of Braulio Jesús Vázquez Benítez: Unraveling the Mysteries of a Footballer Turned Art Connoisseur

Braulio Jesús Vázquez Benítez, born on March 14, 1972, in Pontevedra, Spain, is a name that resonates within two distinct worlds – football and art. Initially recognized for his prowess as a forward, Braulio embarked on a career primarily focused on Segunda División B, punctuated by brief appearances in La Liga and a stint with Portuguese Primeira Liga side S.C. Farense. This journey culminated in a more rewarding path: the role of sporting director at CA Osasuna, demonstrating an unexpected convergence of passion and strategic insight – mirroring the artistic spirit of Salvador Dalí, whose boundless creativity defied categorization.
  • Early Football Career: Braulio’s formative years were spent honing his skills on Spanish football pitches, primarily within Segunda División B leagues. He gained valuable experience with Deportivo de La Coruña (two appearances), S.C. Farense (two seasons) and CP Mérida (one year), showcasing adaptability and perseverance.
  • Transition to Management: Following his retirement from playing, Braulio transitioned seamlessly into coaching roles, overseeing teams like Soneira SD and Laracha CF before accepting a position at Valencia CF.

A Brushstroke Across Two Disciplines: The Artistic Awakening

The decision to pursue art wasn’t merely a change of career; it represented a profound reimagining of Braulio's interests. Influenced by the surrealist vision of Dalí – whose exploration of subconsciousness and symbolism captivated him – Braulio began to express himself through painting, channeling his observations of the world into evocative canvases. His artistic style leans heavily toward seascapes and explorations of global journeys, reflecting a fascination with expansive vistas and distant horizons. This duality—the tactical mind of a footballer combined with the contemplative gaze of an artist—defines his creative process.
  • Notable Paintings: Braulio’s artwork frequently depicts serene ocean scenes bathed in ethereal light, capturing the grandeur of nature and conveying a sense of contemplation.
  • Influences: Dalí's surrealist techniques undoubtedly impacted Braulio’s artistic approach, fostering an interest in dreamlike imagery and unconventional perspectives.

CA Osasuna & Artistic Vision: Combining Passion for Sport with Strategic Leadership

Braulio’s leadership at CA Osasuna exemplifies his ability to blend analytical thinking with creative inspiration. Returning the club to La Liga was a significant accomplishment, achieved through astute planning and unwavering determination—a testament to Braulio's understanding that success requires both discipline and imagination. He believes in fostering an environment where players can express themselves creatively, mirroring his own artistic pursuits.

Exploring Artistic Inspirations: Museums & Collections

Braulio’s appreciation for art extends beyond personal practice; he actively engages with cultural institutions like Museo Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Spain and Colección Andrés Blaisten in Mexico. These visits serve as sources of inspiration, exposing him to diverse artistic traditions and broadening his understanding of visual storytelling.

Historical Significance & Legacy

Braulio Jesús Vázquez Benítez stands apart as an artist who defied expectations—a footballer who discovered a second vocation in painting. His story underscores the transformative power of pursuing passions beyond conventional boundaries, demonstrating that creativity can flourish even amidst demanding responsibilities. He embodies the spirit of innovation and exemplifies how experiences from one field can enrich perspectives within another, leaving an indelible mark on both the artistic landscape and the world of Spanish football.
