- Born Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso on October 21, 1925, in Havana, Cuba.

- Demonstrated an early talent for singing, reportedly beginning to sing as an infant.
- Initially studied to become a teacher but was encouraged to pursue music due to her exceptional vocal abilities.
- Studied music theory, voice, and piano at Havana's National Conservatory of Music.
Rise to Fame in Cuba
- Began her professional career as a vocalist with the renowned group Sonora Matancera in 1950, remaining with them for fifteen years.
- Quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and captivating stage presence, earning the nickname “La Guarachera de Cuba.”
- Mastered a wide range of Afro-Cuban musical styles including guaracha, rumba, afro, son, and bolero.

- Following the Cuban Revolution in 1960 and the nationalization of the music industry, Cruz chose exile rather than align with the new regime.
