Early Life and Artistic Development
Cruz's journey into art began in 1909. Initially self-taught, he relied on newspapers and magazines for his artistic education. His early work displayed a keen sense of humor and social critique, evident in his caricatures and illustrations. He moved to Lisbon in 1910 to study Veterinary Medicine, a path that would ultimately define the latter part of his life. During this period, he became involved with a group of artists who founded the Sociedade de Humoristas Portugueses (Portuguese Humourists Society), participating actively in their Salons of 1912 and 1913.
