The Courret Brothers: Chroniclers of a Changing Peru
The late 19th century witnessed a remarkable transformation in South America, marked by burgeoning urban centers, evolving social structures, and the rise of photography as a powerful tool for documentation and artistic expression. At the forefront of this visual revolution stood Eugène Courret, Aquiles Courret, and E. Courret – collectively known as the Courret Hnos (Courret Brothers) – a Franco-Peruvian photographic partnership whose legacy continues to captivate art enthusiasts today. Their work offers an invaluable window into a pivotal period in Peruvian history, documenting the lives of its elite, capturing the grandeur of its landscapes, and ultimately shaping the nation’s visual identity.
Born in Paris, Eugène Courret (1839-1920) initially honed his skills as a cameraman within the established studio of Eugène Maunoury in Lima. This early apprenticeship provided him with foundational knowledge and experience, preparing him for his pivotal role alongside his brothers. Aquiles Courret and E. Courret joined forces in 1863 to establish “Photo Central,” quickly gaining recognition for their meticulous portraits of Peru’s upper echelon – wealthy landowners, prominent politicians, and fashionable members of society. These weren't merely likenesses; the brothers skillfully employed lighting and posing techniques to convey status, wealth, and a carefully constructed image of respectability. Their subjects were often posed in opulent settings, reflecting the prosperity and ambition of the era.
A Dual Vision: Portraits and Landscapes
While portraiture formed the cornerstone of the Courret Brothers’ business, their artistic range extended far beyond simply capturing faces. Recognizing the growing appeal of landscape photography, they ventured into documenting Peru's diverse geography – from the bustling streets of Lima and Valparaiso to the majestic Andes Mountains and the fertile valleys of the south. This dual focus reveals a keen observational eye and an appreciation for both human society and the natural world. Their landscapes weren’t simply scenic views; they were imbued with a sense of scale, grandeur, and the spirit of exploration – reflecting the burgeoning national identity.
The brothers' photographic style evolved over time, influenced by contemporary trends in European photography. Initially adhering to the conventions of mid-Victorian portraiture, they gradually incorporated elements of realism and naturalism into their work. The Business and Beyond

Recognizing opportunities for expansion, they established studios in Chile and Bolivia under different names – ‘Rowsell Courret Hnos’ being one example – demonstrating their adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit. This international presence further solidified their reputation as skilled photographers and astute businesspeople.
Despite achieving considerable success, the partnership ultimately dissolved in 1873 with Eugène Courret's departure. However, “Courret Hnos” continued to operate until the early 20th century, a testament to the enduring value of their brand and the legacy of their photographic work. Remarkably, much of their archive – over 150,000 negatives – was preserved thanks to the foresight of the Rengifo family, who bequeathed them to the National Library of Peru in 1987. This preservation ensured that these invaluable images would continue to be studied and appreciated for generations to come.
