明治時代には、殖産興業政策(しょくさんこうぎょうせいさく)の一環として、多くの博覧会や共進会が開催された。世界的な規模の万国博覧会に明治政府は積極的に参加し、国内では、全国規模の内国勧業博覧会のほか、地方ごとにも様々な博覧会や共進会が開催された。九州沖縄八県連合共進会は、文字通り九州・沖縄の8県がもちまわりで開催する共進会で、第一回は明治15(1882)年に長崎で開かれた。 第五回九州沖縄八県連合共進会は、福岡で開催された最初の本格的な共進会で、明治20(1887)年に東中洲(ひがしなかす)で開幕した。会場図には、来場者で賑わう共進会場が描かれている。この錦絵の手前に見えるのは、那珂川(なかがわ)にかかる西中島橋で、橋のたもとの石垣は、城下町福岡と商人の町博多を隔てていた枡形門であるが、この共進会の翌年には、枡形門(ますがたもん)撤去が始まり、明治22年(1889)年、博多と福岡は「福岡市」として一つになった。また、左端の白い建物は、九州大学医学部の前身の福岡医学校附属病院である。 【ID Number1992B00010】参考文献:『福岡市博物館名品図録』
