Large central panel of an altarpiece made, by the most qualified Antwerp paintingworkshop, for the then newly founded church of the Madre de Deus Monastery inLisbon (1509). The seven other smaller paintings that surround the central paintingrepresent tragic episodes from the life and passion of Christ witnessed by Mary,thus referred to as His “seven pains”. The monumental figure of the Virgin in bluewould focus the eye of the believer on the altarpiece.
