vicente do rego monteiro, a renowned brazilian painter, sculptor, and poet, was born on december 19, 1899, in recife, brazil. he was part of a rich pernambuco family and began his artistic journey at a young age. in 1911, he traveled to paris, where he attended the académie julian, as well as the academies colarossi and the grande chaumiére.

* participation in the semana de arte moderna exhibition, which helped shape the brazilian modernism movement * association with léonce rosenberg's galérie de l'effort moderne from 1922 to 1930, showcasing his works in various solo exhibitions * illustration of two books, legendes, croyances et talismans des indiens de l'amazone (1923) and quelques visages de paris (1925), which showcased modern art centered on brazilian natives and their traditions
