Obra de gran calidad y refinamiento en el empleo de la pluma de caña, técnica preferida por Castillo y en la que fue consumado maestro, muestra a Santiago con su sombrero característico y con la concha de peregrino apoyado en su bastón. El modo de solucionar el sombreado con el rayado propio de la caña, emulando la impronta que deja el grabado le da también una fuerte personalidad autógrafa al diseño en un estado de conservación extraordinario. Este Santiago habría que relacionarlo con el apostolado que fue de la colección del Instituto Jovellanos de Gijón, encontrando el modelo una fuerte dependencia con el tipo que se advierte en el Santo Tomás de la misma colección, invirtiéndose la actitud y mostrando unos mismos rasgos en la parte inferior. El modo de sugerir los matorrales de la parte terrena de las figuras de los apósotoles es también la habitual en este serie de Gijón y en el Santiaog el Mayor del Museo del Louvre.
