Artwork Description

Entre la producción dibujada de Castillo, hay que señalar las variadas series de ángeles y arcángeles -niños o jóvenes- en composiciones y posturas muy diversas, revoloteando en escenas de temática bien distinta, portando elementos de la Pasión, símbolos eucarísticos o alusivos al representado y que han quedado de manifiesto en significativos ejemplos de los fondos de los Museos del Prado o de Bellas Artes de Córdoba. Está este dibujo realizado a plumilla con un intenso sombreado de líneas entrecruzadas, técnica característica de otros maestros andaluces de la generación anterior, como su propio padre (1565-1626) o Francisco de Herrera el Viejo (1590-1656). Ha de ser considerado como el dibujo preparatorio para el monumental Arcángel San Rafael firmado por el mismo Castillo en 1652 para el Cabido de la Ciudad, que hay que entenderlo como la manifestación plástica del premio ganado por el pintor en el concurso poético en honor del arcángel custodio de Córdoba el año anterior. Debe catalogarse como uno de los denominado dibujos de presentación, ofrecidos a los comitentes por los artistas a fin de obtener el visto bueno de su encargo. Debió, igualmente, servir de inspiración para otra representación del arcángel en una delicada pintura sobre pergamino -dada a conocer por Valverde Candil-, inserta en el Libro de Reglas y Estatutos de la Hermandad de San Rafael de Córdoba, y que fueron aprobadas en 1655 por el Obispo de Córdoba. Ambas fueron encargadas, al igual que la escultura ejecutada por Bernabé del Río ubicada en el Puente Romano, por Joseph de Valdecañas y Herrera, el gran promotor en ese momento del histórico culto que, en Córdoba, se tributa a su santo custodio. Se pueden establecer entre las tres versiones de Castillo una serie de semejanzas, tanto en composición como en atributos, que ponen de manifiesto el reiterado uso que hacía de sus bocetos, modelos y composiciones. Se repite la acentuada frontalidad de la composición y la postura del representado con algunas variantes en su vestimenta y en los atributos que identifican al santo: cetro y pescado se representan en le pergamino y en el dibujo, mientras, en la pintura, el cetro es sustituido por un gran escudo de la ciudad incorporándose, en esta última, un basamento arquitectónico con la dedicatoria y firma del maestro.
