La fama de Castillo va pareja al gusto de los pintores cordobeses posteriores por copiar e interpretar algunas de sus más famosas composiciones.Variada es la temática desarrollada en sus pinturas, de las que tenemos escasas referencias documentales, lo que contrasta con las abundantes noticias sobre su vida familiar o actividades poéticas.A la influencia sevillana, derivada de una estancia juvenil en la ciudad, hay que añadir la de los maestros flamencos y holandeses que debió conocer mediante estampas y dibujos, sin olvidar la tradiciónpictórica cordobesa en la que se formó.Castillo es uno de los más famosos dibujantes de nuestro barroco, tal como demuestra el gran número de sus dibujos conservados, que nos ofrecen una variada temática: religiosa, escenas campesinas, series de cabezas y animales, etc., que constituyen, en ocasiones, los estudios preparatorios para alguno de sus lienzos.Abundantes son las representaciones de animales en sus dibujos, siendo este potro, cuyas patas delanteras apoya sobre un escudo y que remata la fuente de la popular Plaza del Potro de Córdoba, un significativo ejemplo de su producción. Aunque la fuente data de 1577, la escultura fue ejecutada posteriormente por Bernabé Gómez del Río, escultor que colaboraría en más de una ocasión con Antonio del Castillo.
