Artwork Description

Watercolour botanical study painted by Clara Peters. Miss Clara Elizabeth Peters was born in Derbyshire in 1864, the daughter of a Major J.J.Peters. She arrived at Arlington Court, North Devon in 1911, as a paid companion to Miss Rosalie Chichester. Clara was a talented watercolourist, and many of her paintings can still be seen at Arlington Court. They show a talent and interest which she shared with Miss Chichester. During the First World War, Clara and Miss Chichester moved out of Arlington Court to Home Farm, as many of the estate staff were called up to fight. During this time, they created botanical diaries detailing the locations of the flora that they recorded. Many of Clara

The Genesis of a Sound: Unveiling 1991

Born in 1991, the name itself—a deliberate nod to a pivotal year in electronic music history—hints at the artist’s trajectory. Initially emerging from London's vibrant underground scene, 1991 isn’t simply a moniker; it’s a carefully constructed identity reflecting a dedication to pushing boundaries and forging a unique sonic landscape within the drum and bass genre. Early influences, ranging from rock and metal—a surprising foundation for a producer deeply rooted in electronic music—to artists like Moby and The Chemical Brothers, demonstrate a remarkably eclectic approach to sound design. This diverse background informs his music’s ability to seamlessly transition between delicate, atmospheric textures and earth-shattering basslines, a hallmark of his distinctive style.

The artist's journey began not with immediate acclaim but through a period of deliberate development. Initially working under another alias, he spent several years honing his craft, accumulating a substantial catalog of unreleased material—a testament to his meticulous approach and unwavering commitment to quality. This time of incubation proved crucial, allowing him to refine his production techniques and cultivate a signature sound that would eventually captivate the drum and bass community. The challenges faced during this period weren’t merely logistical; they represented a deliberate investment in artistic growth, shaping the artist he is today.

A Rising Star: Early Releases and Critical Recognition

1991 burst onto the scene in 2016 with “Witchdoctor,” an immediate statement of intent. This breakout single, championed by Annie Mac and quickly embraced by key figures within the genre, established a reputation for innovative production and captivating melodies. The track’s success wasn't merely a fluke; it showcased a producer capable of blending complex rhythms with emotionally resonant soundscapes – a combination that would become increasingly prevalent in his subsequent work. Following “Witchdoctor,” releases like *Midnight*, *Guiding Light*, and *Full Send* solidified his position as an artist to watch, earning support from prestigious labels such as MTA Records, OWSLA, and UKF.

These early successes weren’t confined to the digital realm. 1991's electrifying DJ sets have become legendary within the drum and bass scene, characterized by a dynamic interplay between euphoric melodies and powerful sub-bass frequencies. Performances at renowned festivals like Let It Roll, Glastonbury, and Printworks London consistently leave audiences spellbound, demonstrating his ability to translate studio craft into a truly immersive live experience. The consistent demand for his performances speaks volumes about the resonance of his music and his captivating stage presence.

Beyond the Beat: Expansion and Artistic Exploration

In 2022, 1991 unveiled *Odyssey*, a debut album that served as a powerful showcase of his versatility. The project featured collaborations with esteemed vocalists and producers, garnering critical acclaim and further cementing his status as a creative force within the genre. *Odyssey* wasn’t simply an album; it was a declaration of intent—a demonstration of his ability to craft cohesive, multi-faceted narratives through music. This expansion beyond singles and EPs signaled a significant step in his artistic evolution.

Furthermore, 1991's commitment extends beyond the studio. His DJ sets are meticulously curated experiences, reflecting a deep understanding of rhythm, texture, and audience engagement. He’s not merely playing tracks; he’s building journeys— transporting listeners through a spectrum of emotions and sonic landscapes. This holistic approach to music – encompassing production, performance, and curation – is what truly distinguishes him as an artist.

A Legacy in the Making

With a growing international fanbase and a continued dedication to pushing creative boundaries, 1991 remains at the forefront of modern drum and bass. His influence extends beyond individual tracks and albums; he’s actively shaping the direction of the genre through his innovative sound design and forward-thinking artistry.
