Initially apprenticed in shoe-making, Lane’s passion for drawing led him to pursue art, demonstrating an early aptitude that would define his career. The change of name from Nathaniel Rogers Lane to Fitz Henry Lane in 1832 remains somewhat mysterious, though it may have been intended to distinguish himself from another artist, Nathaniel Rodgers.
