Born in Belgium, Weerts’ artistic journey commenced under the nurturing influence of his father, a mechanical engineer who instilled within him an early appreciation for drawing. This formative experience propelled him toward formal training at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Roubaix in 1858, where he honed his skills amidst fellow artists striving to master the exacting standards of the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
His enrollment at the École des Beaux-Arts solidified Weerts’ commitment to artistic excellence and provided invaluable access to influential mentors like Alexandre Cabanel. Under Cabanel's guidance, he cultivated a distinctive technique characterized by careful layering of pigments—a hallmark of Academic painting—resulting in canvases imbued with rich textures and luminous colors.
