teuane ann tibbo, a samoan-born new zealand artist, left an indelible mark on the art world with her vibrant paintings. born in 1895 in pago pago, samoa, tibbo's life took a fascinating turn when she began painting at the age of 71. this unexpected foray into art was sparked by one of her daughters showing interest in the subject.artistic career and notable works
tibbo's work is characterized by its depiction of leisure activities from her samoan childhood, including fishing, cricket, swimming, church, and picnics. her first solo exhibition at barry lett galleries in 1964 marked the beginning of a successful artistic career.- keep it in the heart: the paintings of teuane tibbo, a retrospective of her work, was held at the lopdell house gallery (now te uru) in auckland in 2002.
- her work was also featured in the 2021 exhibition stars start falling at the govett-brewster art gallery and te uru.
