tomás sánchez de la barrera y de la garza, a renowned cuban painter and engraver, has been leaving an indelible mark on the art world since his birth in 1948. born on may 22 in aguada de pasajeros, cienfuegos, cuba, tomás is the eldest of two sons to a middle-class family, where his father was a sugar worker and businessman, and his mother shared with him the sensibility for painting.early beginnings and artistic pursuits
at 16, in 1964, tomás moved to havana and began his artistic journey at the national academy of fine arts san alejandro. he later attended the newly founded national art school (ena) from 1967, graduating in 1971. this period marked the beginning of his illustrious career.awards and accolades
